Beijing, July 8 (TMTPOST) – The metaverse cannot be realized without the support of telecom operators because computing networks are the foundation of the metaverse, China Mobile’s chairman Yang Jie said.

China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, the top three telecom operators in China, jointly held a telecom industry investor conference on Friday.

When asked about the metaverse, China Mobile’s chairman Yang Jie stated that China Mobile has also been studying the metaverse in the recent years, noting that the metaverse is still in its early stage.

From Yang’s perspective, the metaverse has four characteristics: the integration of information technology, artificial intelligence, virtual reality/augmented reality and blockchain; the integration of a virtual space and reality; close connection between the digital world and physical world; the integration of technology and finance; the integration of machine life and human life.

“Without telecom operators, the metaverse cannot be achieved,” Yang said, stating that computing networks are important foundation for the metaverse and that without proper infrastructure there will be no metaverse.

Yang clarified that computing networks are important for the metaverse because the metaverse needs to communicate and process massive amount of data, which requires communication networks and computing power. If the metaverse were to develop prosperously, telecom operators’ information infrastructure is essential.

“At China Mobile, we have been studying the metaverse and its related fields actively,” Yang said.

China’s digital economy’s contribution to the national GDP of China will rise from last year’s 39.8% to over 50% in 2025, said Yang. The information service market will also grow to 22.8 trillion yuan.

China Mobile aims to provide 5G network coverage for all villages and townships across the country by late 2022.

The company also pledges to provide fast, mobile, safe and accessible telecom services for customers and roll out new services such as 5G message, 5G call and cloud gaming.
